About Dark House
Dark House is a first-person 3D horror game. Your car broke down on a stormy night outside an old Egyptian villa, you stepped inside to get out of the rain, and the front door locked behind you with a chain and three padlocks. Inside, the furniture hides under white dust sheets, the lights flicker, lightning flashes in the tall windows and the floorboards creak under every step.
To get out you have to search both floors: the salon, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and study downstairs, and the master bedroom and nursery upstairs. The keys are somewhere different every run, and one of them is always locked in a safe whose four-digit code is chalked on a wall in another room. Your flashlight is your only friend, but its battery runs down, so keep an eye out for spares.
And you are not alone in there. Something tall and dark walks the halls. It hears running feet and creaking doors, and if it sees you, it gives chase. Switch off the light, crouch, slip into a wardrobe or under a bed, and listen to your heartbeat to tell how close it is. Made for players 13 and up, with no blood or gore: the fear comes from the dark, the sounds and a single jump scare if it catches you.
How to play
- Choose a difficulty, Calm, Normal or Nightmare, and press “Enter the house”.
- Search the rooms with your flashlight for the glinting keys.
- If you find the safe, look for its code chalked on a wall in another room and type it in.
- When your heartbeat gets louder or you hear footsteps, turn off the light and crouch, or hide in a wardrobe or under a bed.
- With all 3 keys, go back to the front door, open the padlocks and escape, then try to beat your best time.
Controls
| Keyboard | W A S D to move, Shift to run (it makes noise), C or Ctrl to crouch, E to open doors, take things and hide, F to switch the flashlight, Esc or P to pause. |
|---|---|
| Mouse | Move the mouse to look around (the game captures the pointer when you click the screen; Esc releases it). |
| Touch | Use the stick on the left to walk and drag on the right side to look. Buttons: the hand opens, takes and hides, plus flashlight, crouch, and run while you hold it. |
Tips to win
- Only run when you must: it hears running from far away, while crouch-walking is nearly silent.
- Close doors behind you. It can open them, but that costs it time, and the creak tells you where it is.
- Never climb into a wardrobe while it can see you, or it will know exactly where you are. Break its line of sight first.
- Save your battery: with the light off it struggles to spot you, and lightning lights up the rooms for a moment.
Dark House: questions and answers
Is Dark House free to play?
Yes, it is completely free and runs in your browser, with no download, no sign-up and no ads inside the game.
How scary is it, and what age is it for?
It is a horror game for teens and adults, 13 and up. There is no blood or violence; the scares come from darkness and sound, plus one jump scare if the creature catches you. Pick Calm for a gentler run.
Can I play this horror game on my phone?
Yes. Turn your phone sideways: a stick on the left moves you, buttons on the right open, light, crouch and run, and you drag on the screen to look around.
Are the keys in the same place every time?
No. The keys, batteries, safe and code change every run, so each escape means searching the house again.
What if the game runs slowly on my device?
Open Settings and choose Low quality. It turns off shadows and trims detail to run faster, and most phones start on it automatically (fast ones get full graphics).
